Recently, superstar couple Jay z and Beyonce took a vacation to Cuba celebrating their 5th anniversaryy. But no, considering the fact that Cuba is going though a bit of turmoil within their own country. Apparently, Cuba isnt allowing any type of tourists visitation in the country. Only way around this is to get a presidential pardon, which was claimed to be giving to the couple by president Obama. When asked about this matter president Obama simply said  “This is not something the White House gets involved with, we have better things to do” and left it at just that. Personally it seems as if Obama has more to do with this situation than he is bringing to the light. Is he right for not stepping into the middle of this issue that had may or may not have had a hand in? Is he showing loyalty to his word to Jay z and Beyoncé? Or is he wrong for not saying more than what he should have said if he actually did grant the pardon? What do you think?

  1. I think this isn't fair at all. Why should Jay Z and Beyonce be able to go to Cuba!? Like you said, Cuba is going through a bit of a turmoil. I'd be highly offended if anyone visited where I lived when there are problems within my region. If women are getting arrested for walking around after a certain time, but Beyonce can walk through town no problem makes me believe that she is looked at like a God, which she is not. I don't care how famous or rightous a human being is. If my home is going through difficult times, leave us alone! I'd be embarrassed actually if people from the outside were visiting while it was a complete mess. It looks bad on Obama's part too that he isn't being respectful to Cuba and giving them their needed space... I'm glad they were kicked out of Cuba! Be respectful!

  2. This whole situation is completely political. The supposed presidential pardon actually makes a lot of sense if you take into consideration the relationship between Obama, Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Earlier this year, Jay-Z and Beyoncé held a fundraiser for the Obama campaign at one of Jay-Z’s 40/40 club. According to the Huffington Post, tickets for the event were $40,000 and at least 100 people attended. And if you do the math, that’s at least 4 million dollars raised for Obama’s reelection campaign. Now, if someone manages to raise 4 million dollars for your campaign, then chances are you’re going to have to make it up to them somehow. Hence, the presidential pardon. Furthermore, you have to take into account what Beyoncé and Jay-Z symbolize. The couple is basically an entertainment powerhouse. Cuba and the United States have opposing economic systems, thus by having Beyoncé and Jay-Z visit, proves that their success is an indication of not only the opportunities American capitalism has to offer, but also its superiority. In the end, I don’t believe it is necessarily right for Beyoncé and Jay-Z to be allowed to go to Cuba and sight-see, but haven’t we become accustomed to celebrities getting partial treatment just because they’re famous?

  3. I think it is unfair for the president to grant then pardon and let them go to a country that wasn't even allowing tourists but I agree with Nyamekye. After a four million dollar fundraiser, Obama probably felt as if he owed them something. And I also agree with what nyamekye said about the treatment of celebrities, it is something that we should be used to right now. And finally I honestly don't think this matters that much. We should be giving our time to more important things. I think we should worry about things that matter like the economy or jobs. We shouldn't be hassling Obama about political things like why Beyonce is going to Cuba.
